It’s no secret that there are a ton of benefits to having straight teeth and a great smile – including a huge boost to your self-esteem. If you weren’t lucky enough to have a naturally perfect smile, all isn’t lost!

In fact, thanks to the simple Invisalign process, it’s easier than ever to get that straight smile you’ve been dreaming of at any stage in your life! Wondering what to expect?

Here’s a step-by-step guide that will take you all the way through from your initial Invisalign consultation until you’re the proud owner of beautifully straight teeth.

Your Invisalign Consultation

Once you’ve chosen a dentist you’re comfortable with, you’ll want to schedule a consultation. This is when you’ll find out whether you’re a good candidate for Invisalign treatment.

If you have an underbite, overbite, crowding, or gaps, there’s a good chance that
Invisalign can help you. However, it’s not effective for all orthodontic problems. If you have severe alignment problems, you may find out that traditional braces or another type of treatment is better for you.

While you’re at your consultation, make sure to ask any questions that come to mind. In fact, it’s often a good idea to start making a list of questions a few days before your appointment. That way, you won’t forget to ask when you’re there.

Before you leave, you should know exactly how much your treatment will cost and have a good idea of your Invisalign timeline. Your dentist should weigh the pros and cons with you so that you have all the information you need to make your final decision.

Building Your Treatment Plan

Once you’ve decided to move forward, your dentist will take x-rays, photographs, and created molded impressions. This will allow him or her to start building your custom treatment plan.

Essentially, the dentist creates a digital roadmap that predicts how your teeth will move during the course of the treatment. You may even be able to see images that show what your teeth will look like at various stages of the treatment and when you’re all done.

While most people want to know how long they’ll need to wear their aligners, this is hard to predict. In most cases, however, the treatment lasts between 9 and 15 months.

The Aligner Process

Now, you’ll receive your first set of aligners, and the process is officially underway! You’ll wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them off only when you need to eat or brush your teeth.

Wear these aligners for two weeks, then, you’ll receive your next set. There’s a chance you might experience some discomfort the first few days after you get a new set.

But, since they’re designed for the way your teeth are expected to move, each day they should start to feel a little bit better. In fact, when they do, this is an indication that the aligners are working!

About every 6 weeks you’ll go see your dentist for a check-in. This will allow him or her to make sure things are working as they should and make modifications if necessary.

Reveal Your Gorgeous Smile

Once your treatment is done, you’ll have the straight smile you’ve always dreamed of! Although you won’t need to wear your aligners any longer, your dentist may recommend a retainer, which will help keep your teeth in line.

Typically, you’ll just need to wear this when you’re sleeping. Once you get used to it, you'll barely notice it any longer, and your reward will be a straight smile that lasts for years!
